If requiring to enlarge an image it is usually necessary to move up two paper sizes to keep the aspect ratio (i.e. A3 has its shortest edge (297mm) doubled to be the longest edge of A2 (594mm). Porstmann’s system was introduced as a DIN standard (DIN 476) in Germany in 1922, replacing a variety of other paper formats. Size A4 has its shortest edge (210mm) doubled to be the longest edge of A3 (420mm). The formats for A2, A3, B3, B4 and B5 were developed in France on proposition of the mathematician Lazare Carnot, and published for judiciary purposes in 1798 during the French Revolution. Early in the 20th century, Dr Walter Porstmann turned Lichtenberg’s idea into a proper system of different paper sizes. For panoramic photos, popular sizes include the 6×12 (152 x 305 mm) and the much larger 24×48 (610 x 1220 mm). Such large paper is used to print big images, calendars, posters, and images for display.

ISO paper sizes are all based on a single aspect ratio of the square root of 2, or approximately 1:1.4142. The size of the A3 is 11.7×16.5 (297 x 420 mm).
